Ever wanted to drive like a maniac around a city in a DeLorean sportscar or try and crush fleeing pedestrians beneath the wheels of your monster truck? Well thanks to Xbox now you can!
Wreckless is a full on, action packed racing game set in the crowded streets of Hong Kong. The story is split into two different narratives, one has you working as a duo of female police out to bust the local crime lords, the other has you as a couple of undercover cops trying to stem police corruption... But really? who cares?? all it is, is an excuse to jump in some souped up cars, drive like a total maniac down crowded city streets and bash other cars to smithereens! and the best part of all, its great fun!
The missions vary from simple tasks such as destroying yakuza crime cars, trailing baddies, taking photos, destroying a gigantic earth mover to rescue a professor and naturally, high speed chases with plenty of destruction. Wreckless certainly lives up to its name! The crashes you will take part in (and mostly be the cause of *evil grin*) range from sideswiping cars to full on gut wrenching massive pile ups.
The graphics of the cars and Hong Kong itself really show the power of the Xbox console. I was watching a replay from one mission and a mate of mine asked what it was the intro movie to! The graphics are that good, the whole game is like watching a CGI movie intro. The only complaint that I have is with some of the motion blur and depth of field camera effects that are used. You will be looking down a city street and the end of it will be blurred out as to create a 'depth of field' effect like you are looking through a camera lens.. when i'm driving at 150kph down a city street I would like to be able to see as far as possible please! :-)But saying that, the graphics are amazing. The cars are all amazingly detailed, the reflections and lighting are excellent and the damage inflicted to your car is great. Doors become unhinged, bonnets fly open and windows shatter! Yet during all this carnage the frame rate stays right up there! There were one or two spots that I saw some slowdown but that was extremelly rare. The ingame Hong Kong is extremelly detailed containing street vendors, massive office buildings, skyscrapers, shopping centres, sports fields, and large advertising billboards. The colours of the graphics and the reflections on your car even change colour as the sun sets and at night all the neon signs light up as well.
Thoughts
Wreckless is all about action, if you're a Gran Turismo purist the mission based structure may be a turn off, but Wreckless makes no pretensions to be anything other that what it is, pure simple minded arcade fun! put ya brain on pause and just enjoy it (-:

Pros
- + totally fantastic eye popping graphics
- + good car and city sounds
- + great smashes and particle effects
- + replays are fun to watch
Cons
- - some levels insanely difficult
- - overdone 'camera' effects?
- - pretty lame character dialogue
- - pretty short overall
