Gunmetal is the latest title from Rage Software which you may remember as the makers of 'incoming' for the pc. Incoming was full of amazing graphics and eye candy and their latest game, Gunmetal is no exception!
The game puts you in the cockpit of a gigantic robot that can run around and deal out massive amounts of carnage with its gigantic weaponry, and if that isnt enough you can transform into a fighter jet! and deal out some air to air and air to ground punishment as well! Fans of a certain 1980's cartoon will be in their element.
The graphics in Gunmetal are amazing, theres heaps of ravines and forests amongst the scenery to check out as well as local wildlife on some levels that you can use for target practice if you feel the urge. The graphics dont disappoint once airborne either, i saw absolutely NO popup and you can see for miles and miles when your're flying around.
The missions in Gunmetal vary from your 'protect this area' to 'escort this convoy' through to 'destroy incoming enemy forces' which are all pretty standard fare, but the graphics and the explosions keep you interested enough to keep going. Theres a radio link with your commander who keeps you up to date with the mission and if any of your objectives change on the fly.
As you progress through the missions you get to choose from new weapons to add to your Gunmetal. You start of with normal machine pistols and missiles and get to unlock assault cannons (which basically looks like a shoulder held tank barrel!) through to all sorts of other fun weapons like Napalm and more advanced missiles.
The single player story will keep you interested through to the end, and while some missions are very hard, the game has that 'one more try' factor that keeps you coming back to persevere with it. Unfortunately there are no multiplayer modes which is a real shame as a two player cooperative mode, via either split screen or system link would have been a real bonus. Normal player v player deathmatch may or may not have worked, but it would have been good to see some form of multiplayer included. With four controller ports on the Xbox its a shame that there are still single player only games coming out, as with a bit of thought i'm sure a few entertaining multiplayer Gunmetal scenarios could have been created.Gunmetal is entertaining, your Gunmetal ship looks great, the scenery is fantastic and the enemy ships and explosions are pretty cool! But no multiplayer really hurts its long term appeal. Maybe when games of this nature have no multiplayer modes the developers can come up with other ideas such as bigger and better weapons to unlock on the harder difficulty settings than what you can access on easy or normal modes. Just a thought..
Thoughts
I had a great time playing through Gunmetal and I'm sure that i'll pick it up for another bash in the near future but its overall replay value is hampered by its lack of multiplayer modes. Give it a rent, but you'll either fly through it quickly or give up.
