It will come as no surprise that the focus of this game is Ford cars. There is quite a selection of them available across several different varieties, from Concept cars and SVTs to Offroaders and stock cars. The bulk of the game is played through the Ford Challenge mode, which is a straightforward career type mode, where you complete a challenge for each car, and completing the challenge will unlock new cars, tracks and challenge types. Although this approach is quite simplistic, there is a little more variety than meets the eye. There are several different race types to go through – a standard race of 3 laps, elimination, duel and drafting. You can also choose from easy, medium and hard difficulty levels.

The quality of the tracks varies from decidedly dull to actually quite good. There are several varieties of tracks such as racing circuits, street tracks and off road dirt tracks. The racing and street tracks tend to look quite bland, but some of the off road tracks that are set in amongst jungle and so forth are actually quite pretty. The tracks themselves are straightforward, none of them are particularly challenging and there are no shortcuts or anything of the like. As well as this there are no challenge points or anything similar to collect along the way, so driving around the tracks can become a little tedious, especially in a standard race.

The gameplay options are fairly limited, with just single player or 2 player split screen. It does have Xbox Live support but not for actual play, only scoreboards. This is a nice addition though and for those with Live, it gives you a reason to replay the game and see how high you can score.

The handling for the cars are very straightforward, and definitely more on the arcade side of things than any sort of simulation. The controls are reasonably responsive, although more astute gamers may notice a slight delay between moving the controller and the action happening on screen. However given the arcade nature of the game, this really isn't a problem. The control layout is the standard for racing games and can be changed between several different ones.

Graphically, the game is hit and miss. As stated before some of the tracks are pretty enough, and the car models are fairly average for a racing game. Unfortunately there is no damage shown on the vehicles after collisions, which is fitting for the arcade style of the game but I find it disappointing that so many racers leave this out when it really does add a lot to the gaming experience. All that said though, the cars themselves are fairly accurate models of the actual Ford cars, so those who are buying this game because they are Ford nuts won't be disappointed.

The sound effects and music in this game is probably the games worst point. It seems that no real thought has been put into creating sound effects. The first thing you'll notice is when using the menus, you are confronted by the voice of an annoyingly chipper American female, who does nothing much more than read out whatever it is you have just selected. For example, select Ford Challenge mode and she will say "Ford Challenge!” in her over enthusiastic voice. It may not sound like much, but it becomes quite annoying after hearing it a lot. As well as this, flicking through menu selections produces a somewhat grating "ding” sound. Add the 2 together and it can drive you a bit nuts. It's the kind of thing you'd expect from a 1980s arcade machine, not a 21st century games console.

The music is rather inconsequential and much better turned off as there isn't much variety and it gets repetitive very quickly. Luckily though, the developers were good enough to include custom soundtrack ability, so load up your favourite tunes and away you go.

Thoughts

Ford Racing 2 is a decent enough game that will mostly appeal to those who are big fans of Ford cars. There is nothing that really stands out in this title; however it does do everything to an acceptable level. To its credit, it never really tries to be anything more than what it is – a budget priced title aimed squarely at fans of the brand or racing game nuts in general. And at that level, it succeeds.

Pros

  • + good selection of Ford cars available to drive
  • + decent variety in race types and tracks
  • + budget priced
  • + scoreboard and custom soundtrack support

Cons

  • - very average graphics and sound
  • - can become tedious and repetitive
  • - not particularly challenging
