Wireless Steering Wheel - thoughts/opinions?

Hi All,

I'm considering buying the Microsoft wireless steering wheel, and thought I'd seek your opinions on it. Do you use it often, or after the initial fun is it now gathering dust? Is it really practical to use on your lap (attaching it to anything for my setup would be akward)?

So, for those that own one, and even more so those that did but no longer (I'm interested in why you got rid of it if that's the case) let me know your thoughts!

Thanks

Can answer part of your question.
Yes I do use my wheel a lot, but find it depends on the game, eg: Forza always use the wheel, Grid I did not like the way the wheel felt so use the controller. Forza is what I mostly play however only use Grid for short burst arcade fun. I think it would really depend on how much you already play racing games.

Do not have the official microsoft wheel though so can make no comments about the rest of your question.

The official wheel is good great to play games with but useless to use on your lap, you will need a table or stand of some sort to mount it on. Which in turn makes it a bit of a pain to set up if you can't leave it set up. I haven't used mine in a while and being a pain to set up is the reason.

I had the official microsoft one and got rid of it. It's a very good steering wheel, I just didn't use it much, mostly because it was a bit of a pain to setup, and I am also a lot better with a controller. Also, I mostly play games to chill out, and sitting at a desk with a steering wheel isn't very relaxing. If you have an ideal setup for it its not too bad, otherwise if its going to be sitting on your lap I wouldn't bother.

If you can mount it to a desk and have Forza, Dirt and one of the PGR's then it's a recommend from me. If not, then a maybe. I use it in my lap on a beach chair and it works okay, just no where near as good as a desk.

Same here. Those three games are great for the wheel and I believe there is no point in buying the wheel unless you can anchor it to a desk, or something.

It is a very good wheel for the price... except for the pathetic 3 month warranty that is standard for all xbox 360 accessories. No delay in the wireless response and the force feedback is good. However you do need to plug in the AC adapter for the force feedback to work... making the wireless feature not so wireless. If you don't plug in the AC adapter, you'll just get rumble.

Like any racing wheel it is useless on your lap. Best option is to mount it to a desk/bench/racing cockpit lol. I went for the expensive option and picked up one of these bad puppies from www.wheelstandpro.com. I remember it being something like $330 when I bought it, seems to have gone down to $245 now (still expensive though!).

By far the best solution if you don't have a desk anywhere near the vicinity of your 360. I use it on a couch and it's very stable. You can easily and quickly adjust the height/angle of the wheel and move the pedals backwards/forward. It also folds away very easily (with the pedals/racing wheel still attached). It's like a fold up scooter, there's just two levers you need to pull on to fold it away/set it back up again... takes seconds. It actually fits under my bed... I have pics to prove it if you don't believe me!

One of the big reasons why people stop using a wheel is because they get sick and tired of having to set it up every time they want to use it... hell sometimes they even stop playing racing games because of it.

You do need to secure the wheel, I knocked up a foldable stand out of wood for aprox $30. A touch bigger than Big Col's but still folds and fits under the bed very easily.
