It is not known yet how the HD DVD add on will work - there's no official specs or anything.. Also HD DVD region coding hasn't been finalised yet, so it pretty much doesn't exist at this point.

one would assume it would be the same region setup as DVD to ensure playback compatibility for DVD discs on the HD-DVD players?
just a thought anyway :)

Although one would hope that it is region free ensuring compatibility with all region formats ;)

Wasn't the Xbox DVD playback kit like that? It was locked to the region of the first DVD you watched?

My thinking is the HD-DVD drive will play the disc (of course) but the 360 itself will de-scramble it in a sence, So if it's plugged into a PAL console it will only play PAL HD-DVD's and if you were to remove it and plug it into a NTSC console it will only play NTSC HD-DVD's.

Lets hope not otherwise i will be stuck with this second console (PAL) i have purchased which i was planning on selling :P

Im just a little confused about the point of it... It isnt for games, just for movies. So why not just buy a normal HD DVD player? Unless this things going to be a lot cheaper then a normal player, its kind of pointless and a keeping up with the Jones's thing with Sony's Bly Ray.

Yes it is only going to cost about US$200,, whereas a HD DVD player would cost you nearly $1000, as far as i know!....

It doesn't have to be because the HD DVD spec is totally separate. The Toshiba HD A1 has region coding for DVD, it will only play region 1. But it doesn't have any region code for HD DVD.
I think I read some where that there could be even less regions than DVD too. They haven't decided yet.
If I remember right the Xbox DVD region code was activated by the IR modual that you plugged into it.
With HD DVD it could be the drive that has the region code (like it is with computers). I think there's a good chance of that. Otherwise it would have to be in the software. Your dashboard would have to be upgraded to a specific region.
There's only 3 seperate regions of 360's. HD DVD would most likely have more regions than that so it's unlikely 360 regions would be used as a basis for the HD DVD drive region.

The Toshiba HD DVD player is $500 US. We don't know what price the HD DVD add on is yet, though people are speculating $200 US.

In that case, hell yeah! I was going to get a HD DVD player, so if this is true then it validates the purchase of the 360 even more.

right now first gen HD-DVD players are going for $651.844 AUD shipping not included and BD players are going for 1,303.76 AUD shipping not included.
So if you already own a X360 and want to play HD-DVD movies then pretty much any price under those prices is good value.

Though the 360 wont have as many features. For example the Toshiba HD A1 can decode Dolby Digital Plus and output it through the 5.1 analougue out or through the HDMI as 5.1 PCM. The not as good sounding method is re-encoding the DD+ to DTS and ouptuing through the SPDF output. The 360 doesn't have 5.1 out or HDMI so it will probably re-encode to DTS.
The 360 will look pretty good but I have doubts whether it will match the HD A1 which has fantastic picture quality, read the best consumer video ever seen so far.
