View Full Version : Component vs HDMI?

When I went to put a deposit on my 32" Samsung LCD, the salesman told me that the TV supports HDMI which would be perfect for Xbox 360 and movies.
Just curious, is HDMI better than the normal component cables the 360 comes with? He told me that EB sell the HDMI cable for the Xbox.
What do you guys think? Is it worth the extra $$$ to buy the cable over component? I had a look through the 'Connect your Xbox - Know the facts' thread here, but I didn't see anything about HDMI in there.

The Xbox 360 does not support HDMI, the saleman as usual doesn't have a clue of what he's talking about.
At beast there's only a small deference between them. Basicaly the only deference between component and HDMI/DVI is one's analogue and the other is digital.
EDIT: As an example, I reckon a Pioneer DVD player we have looks better than the LG one we tried before. The Pioneer is connected via component while the LG was hooked up via HDMI. So HDMI doesn't always equal superior as it's very much dependant on your source. So don't don't let people tell you HDMI is always best or you have to have it. Component is good too and avoids any potential HTCP incompatibility nasties aswell.
Another EDIT: Though HDMI or HTCP compatible DVI is a good thing to have on your display. :)
Morgan, the 32" Samsung is a great TV.
You don't need to spend the extra money to get a HDMI cable for your X360. The difference between that and the component cables isn't that significant.
Having a HDMI connection on your TV will be useful in the future for plugging in HDDVD / BluRay players though.

Thanks Paranoid & Vic. I guess it's component for me then.
I was looking at all the different LCD's at the shop, in the end, personally I think the Samsung looked the best, in picture quality, features (connectivity ect...) and overall design.
Also, having a friend there who can get it for me @ cost price, I was happy as Larry. hehe.
I will post pics once it's all set up, that should be next Wednesday.

I'm tipping its some sort of toyota.
anyways, the other plus of HDMI is that sound is put through the 1 cable too - cleaning up the back of the TV area. Not that that's any good to X360.

OT - 12.95 @ 106MPH nice.... What car?Toyota Soarer, I did a few mods to the car since then and I did another crappy 12.99 @ 110MPH... My god it's so fast now! Can't wait to actually be able to put my foot down without smoking the wheels.

Oh great decision Morgs! As stated above there is no HDMI cable for the X360. However, it should be common with HDDVD and BlueRay, and maybe the PS3. Samsung have a HDMI DVD player out at the moment, but personally I am waiting for HDDVD to become available. Also keep the VGA cable for the X360 in mind for your Samsung. I use one on mine and it looks outstanding. Although I haven’t tried component so not sure if there is a major difference.

I'm having a few problems with it.
The colours just don't look right.
Blacks/shadows looks slightly pink / redish.... It's really doing my head in, do you have this model Darksheer? If so, what settings are you using.
The same problem occurs with 720/1080, just in different ways, the 720p looks better.
On this set, you can adjust the pink, green and blue from 0-100. and I just don't get it, the manual is no help either.

I have the 360 using 720p. The picture is a lot sharper ; whereas the 1080 looks washed out and quite bland . In 1080 it is stretched so I'm not sure if all games (if any) support 1080?

Yeah, I have tried both 1080 and 720 and I think that 1080 looks better, as the colours aren't all friggen red.
Why is life so hard. I am terrified to call Tech Support, because they will treat me like a noob, or try and blame my hardware not their product. :(

With the VGA cable it sets it up automatically, so there is no mucking about. As such I can’t give you the numbers.
But here is the model I have (just look for my post on the first page of that thread)
