I'm not sure if it's as prevalent in the Jap/Asian versions of the game, but the fully English version of the game is perhaps the gayest game on Xbox 360 to date. I played it for about an hour at Ubisoft the other day so I'll have a full write-up soon, but Makoto ought to have taken the #1 slot in that Gayest Videogame Characters poll for sure.

I also don't know if this runs throughout the entire game, but half the time I spent playing the game was sifting through dialogue in which Makoto professes his love for Toya (the other male character), making him love-lunches, and bickering with Atsuma over who gets to love Toya the most.

Honestly, it's pretty off-putting even for a JRPG and I think it's probably one of Ubisoft's riskiest ventures so far. Underneath the homoeroticism and excess of gushing dialogue it looks like there's probably a pretty decent game to be had. Combat felt a little stuffy but I think that was mainly due to me just playing the sort of tutorial, opening battles of the game.

I don't know if it's just the way you wrote it Dom, but that sounds pretty hilarious.

'Love-lunches' :chortle:

Oh no, it *is* hilarious, at least it will be for the first couple of hours, then I imagine it's going to get pretty old pretty fast...that's assuming it maintains the introduction's level of gayness...maybe once you get into the, ehem, meat of the game, they'll done it down and the emphasis will go back to combat or a more traditional storyline.

LOL and it was sounding so promising, too. Are you sure the gayness of it isn’t just a mistranslation. Maybe they are just brothers? :chortle:

Someones a little homophobic :chortle:

But those "love-lunches" do sound a little disturbing...

I'm not homophobic, but I don't want homosexuality smeared in my face for 20 hours of gameplay either. I wouldn't buy a game with excessive homosexual references/ acts because it would put me off playing it too much. It's the same with too many homosexuals in TV; there's one in every show now, hardly an indication of life in any way, and it pisses me off, and I have very little interest in watching shows that do this. It has become cool to have some token homosexuality and I don't like it at all.

i like to get into my game stories and characters. Im not a homophobe but i dont think i could get into this game now that i know that the main character really really loves men... He probably has some shit-ass nick name like sweet-lips or Rimdaddy...

Hey guys, I just thought I'd clarify...this isn't like an episode of Queer as Folk with explict descriptions/depictions or anything like that, it's very, well, very Japanese for want of a better word. I'm not sure if they have the sorts of homosexuals over there we're used to, but Makoto is very camp and obviously gay, but I don't think it's really in-your-face enough to warrant not playing the game at all. It's certainly off-putting and I imagine it might ruin the experience for some, but I'd check the game out anyway.

And like I said, I only played the opening part of the game...as far as I know, it may be something that fades into the background a little once you get into the main story. Although it *is* pretty much the only reason Makoto and Atsuma (or whatever your guy's name is) even talk to each other, so....

*Sigh*...its only for the start of the game. I have played the game and you people don't need to worry about Makoto.

'Makoto' will not be in majority of the game. Something happens to him somewhere at the start of the game.

I'm not into homosexuality but this game just has it for fun and laughs. Nothing ever happens to the homosexual themes that take it to a whole new level. If you're uncomfortable about the homosexual themes, just ask me questions about the game and I'll try to answer.

It's sad how homophobic people still are these days... I'd be ecstatic to play an RPG without the typical love story.

Aww, but homophobic people are funny. :chortle:

I'm actually amazed at how long this topic has stayed here without turning into a constant stream of gay jokes(yes, I'm aware there are a few, but it's not bad considering)...

I don't think it's an issue of being homophobic at all, at least not for me, it's more that I can't relate to gay subplots and they don't interest me. I don't watch Queer As Folk or the L-word either, because they just don't hold any sort of interest for me. It'd have to be a pretty brilliant game for me to want to sit down and play a game where my character has to be gay. If it's a player-determined choice in an RPG or something like in Fable, cool, that's fine because I can still play it straight, while the minority can play for the other team. No dramas. But when it's a linear RPG or game where it's forced on a player, I don't see how its going to be relevant for 80-90% of gamers.

So it's good to know that the Makoto/Atsuma thing doesn't override the rest of the storyline...not only is it gay, but it's REALLY frickin' annoying the way they deal with it.

BUt it's the same emotions these characters are going through.. it's all love and lust, because the other character has a penis the emotions are unrelatable?
I can understand to a point but to say it's suddenly unplayable seems a bit much.

Dominus

Well I never said it would be unplayable, I intend to play the game still, but I get that you're probably leveling that comment at some of the other posters in the thread. And it's a moot point anyway since it isn't the major theme of the game in this case.

But yes, for a lot of people it may well be unrelatable! If you're being forced down a story path where your male avatar is in love with another male avatar, that'd be totally off-putting for a lot of people, or just outright inconceivable. As I said in my previous post, if it's a *choice* like they touched on with KOTOR or it's an option like in Fable, I don't think the majority of people would ever care because it doesn't necessarily impact on their gameplay experience. But sexuality - like gender choice - is something that can make or break a game for certain people, especially in a role-playing context. I remember one of our female forumites here saying she'd find Fable hard to get into since she could only be a male character. Gender is a fairly superficial aspect of a game too, once you get into the territory of emotion and love etc, I think the impact on individuals becomes much greater.

I also admit I've got no idea how the reverse is true for actual gay gamers- do they find hetero storylines and the obligatory big-breasted heroines off-putting? I'm sure there's an interesting thesis in there somewhere for sociology students :) Although it's probably not relevant discussion for our forum, and we've taken this thread way off-topic already!
