View Full Version : Saints Row Hype? Why?

So I've got GTAIII, VC and SA and I haven't finished any of the three - i got close to finishing the first one though.

I want to know why there is so much hype behind Saints Row, is it just xbox fanboys finally getting a good GTA type game before the PS2, or is Saints Row really going to live up to its potential? It kind of reminds me of Killzone - being touted as the HALO killer, but ended up being a piece of turd.

So far i haven't really heard anything thats interested me so far, multiplayer should be amusing, but i play games for their story and GTA type stories have never interested me - usually some dead beat looking for respect. The face generator has been done countless times in many games, and i have heard the control scheme is alot better than GTA but its hard to believe its taken 5 years to fix this simple problem.

The only thing that might make me buy this game is finally playing a GTA game in high res cause GTA was butt ugly on the PS2. I have a ton of games that need to be finished already and i really don't want to add any more to the growing pile.

So finally my question is - what makes YOU excited about Saints Row? and what is ORIGINAL in Saints Row that YOU love?

Hehe! Great point. When I thought about why I was even looking forward to Saints Row, I couldn't think of any really great reason besides the obvious:

... With big releases so few and far between, it's pretty easy to get excited about any games being released at all!

Also, I'm not even sure what is original about Saints Row. I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to GTA style games. I never really enjoy them as much as I think I will, but I'm always keen to give them a go. I think it's just the... promise of so much game to be gamed in one game that makes the greedy little child in me salivate.

When I really get down to it, I usually get fairly bored after I've run over a handful of pedestrians and then took the car around a few neighbourhoods. :(

So yea... I've no idea why I'd want Saints Row... but... I want it! It's a disease! I must be stopped!!

Defuniak.

Me personally, I'm just excited that there's, you know, a proper game coming out on the 360...

If you don't like GTA games or find them only moderately interesting at best, there's probably not much going to interest you that much in Saints Row. That's like saying "What's the hype about in Lord of The Rings?" if you're not into fantasy or "What's the hype about the 69 position?" if you're not into oral sex.

Things I'm looking forward to: High def, good looking urban mayhem game with dynamic lighting, customising cars (store 64 cars with customised interiors/exteriors), decent character and clothing, richer experience at ground level, cool sounding MP varients, free aim (target lock cheapened GTA substantially in my eyes)

I can go on and on, but in the end if these games aren't your cup of tea then that's all there is to it. I've always wanted a next gen urban mayhem game and this has the potential to deliver. It doesn't have bikes or aircraft - which is a little bit of a bummer, but personally I think the Havok engine will be sure to entertain me in ample conpensation.

Haha he's got a point. If you dont like GTA you probally aint going to like this game. Stop trying to look for ways to like it just because everyone else does.

Im personally a huge fan of GTA games and have finished all three. Ive been a fan since I was 12 years old and I played it in 2D on my PC.

But what's to hype fans of GTA?

I like GTA, and think Saint's Row will just be a hi-def GTA clone.

BIG DEAL! *yawn*

Multiplayer sounds kinda interesting, but I don't really like the multiplayer on Liberty Stories on PSP, and suspect it'll play the same on the Xbox360

I'm hoping GTA4 will do something radically different with the series, and put a stop to these clones for good!

you hit the nail on the head there! - i seem to pick up games all the time especially when they are on special.

i like the GTA gameplay and mechanics, but the theme is really wearing thin on me. Ive never wanted to become a gangster or be a badass so why do i have to be one so many times over. obviously this is a ridiculous argument because you can't have a GTA game without being a gangster, but nevertheless its been done to death.

EDIT: and yes in oblivion and all those other games, i always try to be the morally correct and good guy.

I play video games to do things in a virtual world that I cant do in the real world. Ive never really wanted to race cars, and I know I would kill myself doing so, so I pop on Need For Speed or PGR. Ive never really wanted to run over a person in real life, however I enjoyed doing it gracefully in Carmagedom, and the same applies to GTA. To be able do something you cant do in real life, in an open virtual world is what attract gamers.

You can go around and be the badass you dont wanna be in real life.

Same here. Im excited about it because it looks like a half decent game, something we dont see much of on the 360. And shock horror it isnt just a port of an old PC game or a high definition Xbox game! What next?!

I'm excited about it because its not as open-ended or set in as large a world as the GTA series. They were a bit big for my tastes. I got bored eventually. This is a lot more streamlined experience. It also has a lot better graphics; awesome graphics.

Building a character offline, fully customising him and his car, and taking them online, is going to be great. Then being able to continue building that character online before transferring him back to offline singleplayer will take it even further.

Add to that matchmaking just like halo 2, some awesome gang (clan) integration features, some fantastically fun and innovative multiplayer game modes, and a lot less generic single player activities than the sterile GTA gameplay formula and you have one hell of a game.

The other reason I'm excited about it is because all of the people who have played the demo are all screaming "Game of the Year".

Tmorrow morning can't come quickly enough.

Personally what I think will make or break this game will be the quality of the missions which so far very little has been said about. GTA:SA is one of my favourite games ever, but what made it great for me was the great writing, charachters and voice acting. I tried to like GTA3 I really did but I just couldn't get past the clunky controls. Got about 1/2 way through Vice City before giving up but it was SA that really did it for me.

SR seems to have a great game engine but it remains to be seen how well the story plays out. Driving over peds and beating grannies is fun for only so long. (OK a fair while)

GTA gameplay with a greater emphasis on 'pimping your ride'.

I'm really all for pimping all sorts of things, you know, adding bling and feathers and stuff.

Really I just like the word pimping.

One concern I have is that I've only seen cars in the clips and images, no motorbikes or trucks or flying vehicles. Hopefully the final version has that variety of vehicles. I loved the ever widening fleet of vehicles with each subsequent sequal of GTA presented.

Sorry to inform you but it has been confirmed that there will be no drivable airplanes, helicopters, motorbikes,, ( there may be boats,, maybe )...

Good things were said about True Crime aswell (someone else pointed this out in another Saints Row thread (BTW, one more Saints Row thread and i'll have a hissy-fit)).

1: After what happened to True Crime (even though it had a funny story and had really good "lame hollywood" style characters), nothing so far makes me THAT excited about SR.

2: Find me something original in SR and you deserve an award. Rather, what does it have to offer that GTA doesnt? And to answer that...so far, from what i read, it takes ideas from GTA and goes further with them. In other words, it'll mostly be the things that Rockstar are going to do with GTA4.

But now Rockstar will have the advantage, because they can take the good stuff from SR and implement it into GTA4.

I guess I'm looking forward to GTA 4. New much more powerfull hardware (no Shite-to-program-for-Station 2) and a new game engine right? So it should be a much bigger step up than what GTA:SA was.

But GTA wont be untill 2007. So I bloody well hope Saints Row is any good!

well having played it for all of 10 minutes before going to work - yep how sad am i - i got up early to play a game - the graphics are solid without being spectacular, its just a relief not playing a GTA game with butt ugly GTA graphics. They controls and handling of the cars are EXACTLY the same as GTA, and the animations when the guy runs are exactly the same too. Even all the buttons are the same - like Y to jack a car, A to accelrate. well u can change the controls later if you want to.

The demo should last at least a couple of hours - which is just fantastic. Anyways anyone wanting to get this game won't be disappointed, but don't expect anything you've never seen before.

Well my care factor for this game just dropped significantly after having a go at the demo.
Average graphics, lame car handling, the peds say some really stupid things but most of all.. the way the guy stands!! God how lame. I just couldnt get over it, This dude is supposed to be my tough guy avatar and he looks like such a wanker standing around with his head cocked to the side and arms bowed out.
Maybe its because he ended up looking like the guy with the big jaw from Family Guy but sheesh. I wanted to slap him out.

GTA games are a lot smoother. This game feels like there is an invisible sheet slowing you down a bit everytime you move around.

Average graphics
So I take it you were expecting Halo3/DoubleAgent/Prey/PGR3 graphics? Remeber, the city is huge. It would've probably been too hard to make super-dooper graphics for all of the big town. That being said, I reckon the graphics are sweet. Nice lighting, things look real as opposed to GTA games.

Yeah super graphics. Maybe you need to upgrade from the 31cm SD Conia TV you're playing on. :chortle:

Awesome demo. Sooo much better than crappy GTA.

As for the bloke saying find me something original in this game....

Um, multiplayer in open world game for starters...

OH MY GOD! You people can NOT be serious about this game looking next gen.

The frame rate doesn't go beyond 20.

The character models are crude and poorly animated.

The cars don't even leave tire tracks when on the sand - even GTA:SA on PS2 did that!!

The car damage and shine look ok, and the fire / water effects are kinda ok, but I've seen better on Xbox.

And Multiplayer in an open world has been done on GTA for PSP...

There will be no open/free roam for multiplayer. Just 6 gametypes versing other online gangs.

If people want this game they should grab it early on. I know it's already been classified but when the media jump onto the get this game banned bandwagon which I think will happen it will end up a collectors item like manhunt. I'm guessing the drug use in the game will be what sparks the controversy more than violence or sex related material. The car handling is better than gta really but thats sorta what the demo is, a really polished version of gta if the game offers something beyond that it might be worth getting but if it's just a gta clone then it is a bit ho hum.

Played the demo for 15 minutes and turned it off. It just doesn't feel right. Cars reverse flat out, have no weight, and just handle shit. My first shot was a driver in a car that was stopped. The second after I shot him he appeared standing in the car and then fell over dead in the car and dissappeared (really realistic :banghead: ).

I won't be buying this one.

Fair enough, but I suggest you keep an open mind as the demo is several months old and lots of glitches will be ironed out. See what people say after they get the full game.

I dont think its unreasonable to expect state of the art graphics considering thats why most people shelled out $650 on the console, I dont care how hard it is. It can be done, look at Oblivion. Personally I cant see a huge difference in the graphics of this game over what the Xbox could have been capable of in standard definition.
