Hey all,
Last night my console couldn't find any profiles on the Hard Drive. I powered down, removed drive, connected drive and powered on and still nothing.
I checked the System blade and under Storage my profile stated corrupted. To ensure it wasn't my Hard Drive at fault I played a song that is on it fine.
Here are the steps I went through to recover my Profile. Please note that Microsoft actually state you will lose your save games. I didn't.
1. Delete the corrupted profile (only delete the profile not saves and achievements)
2. Recover the profile from Live (this took over 5 minutes)
I am very thankful that I didnt lose anything...

Tell me about it... I was sweating bullets.. Glad to see Microsoft have thought about this. I honestly don't understand how this happened.

Was the warning about losing your saves when you were trying to delete your profile? Cause that would make sense. If you didn't have that profile, you wouldn't be able to access them.
But since you recovered it, you can still use the saves associated with that profile name.

No, the warning is also on the recovery of Profile screen. So both in the deleting of Profile and the recovery of Profile sections it warns that all saves will be lost. Thankfully this wasnt the outcome.

Well thank christ for that, profile is recovered and looks like I'm ok. Just tried 3 games and the saves are all fine.
Luckily I remembered reading this thread a while back (thanks Ash :D)
Don't know what the hell happened, I was playing Top Spin 2 before I went to bed last night, my profile was fine and I ejected the game and turned the 360 off normally.
I would have been spitting chips if I lost anything - I accidentally turned off Burnout Revenge a while back when it was saving and lost my game save when it became corrupt (35% of game was complete at the time). So thank goodness that didn't happen again :speechles
cheers.

It runs Windows :chortle: . In all seriousness this is a bit worrying, do Microsoft know what causes it?

is there a way to copy your profile, save games and achievments onto a 360 memory card?
Since its using windows we are prolly best backing up once a week or so
It's not running windows...

Yes you can copy your profile (which takes into account your achievements) and saved games onto a 360 memory card, I do that often when Im going to the local 360 lounge. Although even the memory cards can become corrupted and data lost.

Some saves can't be moved. DOA4 and PDZ are a couple of examples I can think of. Perhaps the saves are linked to your gamertag rather than your profile.

Yeah, I've had corrupted file twice before but both times I was able to get away with it without losing any save files all because of this thread. Thank you all!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but its better than making an all new one :D
After reaching the high of making it through a tough section in GOW on Hardcore difficulty (i suck at the single player, took me months just to have the patience to get through casual). I turned off the console as normal last night, turned it on earlier and the 360 said it had 0 profiles on the system, i of course shat myself (not literally) and didn't know what was going on. Took the HDD out, and examined it (not that i would be able to determine anything) but upon reinserting it and starting it up, i was able to see 2 profiles - but not the main profile i use for XBL and the massive gamerscore accumilation i have (well not that big... but 9000+ since November/December is pretty good for my standards).
I did the Gamertag recovery (minus the loss of achievements & gamesaves), everything WAS back to normal. Except after about 30 minutes of gaming, my profile reset itself back to the default state (dashboard theme reverted back to the default one used when you first turn the system on for the first time, gamerpic reverted back to a Pac-man ghost AND my Gamerscore reset itself back to 0 :banghead:).
After a few play arounds, and Gamertag retrivals i'm still at the same position i was at before (after awhile the Gamerscore & settings reset back to their original defaults).
Very annoying, i don't particularly want to start again - in raising the Gamerscore as well as having to pay for (or at least download) the arcade games, gamerpics, additional content again.
