I can confirm that Halo 2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Jade Empire all work.

I think the emulator up to version 1.2 at the moment.. But it's been like that since I got my 360(about a month ago). I'm not expecting them to add many titles from here on in. I think they will mainly add new release Xbox games.

The fact that some of the games weren't released in Australia(or ever PAL format for that matter) is obviously not worth the 5 minutes it would take to remove them from the Aussie list.

I hadn't really given it due thought until now, but really, a token effort of 100-200 titles means they can say they tried, and not compromise potential sales by encouraging users to play old games they own or even worse, spend their money on 2nd-hand shite from eBay/EB!

The reason why some games are BC and some arent is simply because some games are easy to get working on the 360 and some arent.

You have to remember MS doesnt just say "this should be BC" and thats the end of it. They have to actually get the game to work on the entirely new hardware. The biggest problem is most likely the two different GPU's which both work in entirely different ways, which means getting certain games to work is not going to be easy.

I remember the bloke who is in charge of BC development saying that sometimes they are working on certain game and they finally get it working, which in turn lets them use that same technique to get a whole heap of other games working too.

Another factor is that MS probably needs to consult with the original developers and perhaps they are not interested in getting their old game working on the 360 because they are working on more important things.

look at it this way, a fresh HDD has halo2 and halo1 on it, it looks like they had to work fast to get this list of games working, they must've made an emulator and these games were acceptable, and they blocked the rest.
soon after they added the tom clancy games so obviously they were working on those.

last I heard they are working on priority titles, these are the popular games and they will need to spend time on the individually (like they would have with halo/2).

anyway i'm sure they didn't really think of getting shit games on the list, that's just the way in panned out, they worked best on the emulator they made.

Shotgun on testing Ninja Gaiden! I heard the performance was awful on the US machines (around 15fps) and I want to see if they have fixed that yet.

Also it isn't just the GPU that is the problem, the CPU is an issue as well. Since they can only use 1 core, plus the fact that Xenon lacks Out of Order execution, the CPU is chokeing on game code in BC.

Both lists are different. The Aussie one only has a small amount. The US one has heaps.

Can anyway else confirm that they have been able to play GTA San Andeas (PAL) on an xboz360 (PAL)?? How?

I thought it was supposed to just download the update from xbox live and just work.
Very disappointed :-(

Jess, I Installed the US X360 emulator earlier this evening and it works a treat. I have no idea if it actually has more games on it that the Aus version, but it works without any issues. The games do actually look better than they did before (and I say this in reference to jaggies on LCD, they seem to be gone). I have been playing Deathrow and in-game looks much better. I have no idea if it is 720p, but it looks much better than the previous 480p.

I am a little disappointed with games that do not support widescreen. Jade Empire looks great, but you can’t play it in widescreen... well not that I am aware of. I’ll check to see if I can find some options, but it looks doubtful.

I thought it would automatically download the update needed to get rid of jaggies. I have tried Halo 2, DOA 3 and GTA: San Andreas and they all work but they don't seem to be running at 720P?? All the jaggies are still there and they look to be running at 576i or 480i. Do I need to download the updater from the web and burn it to a CD to be able to run them in HD?

Tried the update but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. All the games (Halo 2, Halflife 2, GTA: San Andreas) just seem really jaggy. I really disappointed as the film I downloaded fromn Gamespot look heaps better (of Halo 2 SD vs HD). Unless I'm doing something wrong?

I can't get anything to work to the point of just giving up. The odd game I get the menu but as soon as the game starts my plasma comes up with a loss of sync signal even though I can still hear it. Do you have to change something in the set up .. flick it back to tv rather than hdtv? I have it running in 720p. Honestly i'm glad i kept my old xbox and will unpack and plug it all back in tomorrow. While I doubt it will get much play fifa and madden are not up to scratch on xbox yet and they are probably the 2 games I can't live without. The whole backwards compatablity thing is a total con by microsoft.

Like I said before, MS really aren't making any money off this(since people will mostly just be playing games they already own), so I'm thankful that they are doing it at all.

And good to see they updated a few games too. Apparently Ninja Gaiden and Fable had particularly crap frame rates..

But it's also a major selling point for MS. I think most people who own an xbox would be much more inclined to buy the 360 because it is BC than if it wasn't BC at all. For me if alot of my games weren't BC, i would've seriously considered not updating to 360 so soon and waited for a fairly big price drop. After forking out $650 for the unit itself alot of people's budgets are stretched as it is and can't really afford games as well which makes backwards compatibility even more important for MS.

It won't stop me at all from buying 360 games and i say the more they bring on the better, it's just that after that initial outlay i'm a bit short atm and after finishing PDZ, i'm happily playing my original xbox games until i top up my bank balance again ;)

I had to boot up the ol xbox today so I could play halo 2 with some friends... god it was such a chore.. controller felt terrible.. graphics were average... couldnt invite a friend for a chat.. Like I said before, MS really aren't making any money off this(since people will mostly just be playing games they already own), so I'm thankful that they are doing it at all.

well, they aren't making money directly off of it but their motivation is to get as many of the xbox 1 games to work on the 360 so that it increases the game library for the 360 making it look like a more attractive console to people trying to decide which console to buy and also for the people that already own a 360.

I had the original compatibility patch loaded as of launch night, and Forza ran OK with it last week.
HOWEVER.
I loaded the "update" last night and it wrecked the sound quality of the game!

blowie, don't know if you've already downloaded it or not but there has been an update to the 'backwards compatability update'. It was released a few days ago but I only just noticed it then.

“Today we’ve released a compatibility update to resolve the loss of audio problem some customers outside of North America and Asia were experiencing with the March update. The Backwards Compatibility product is complex and we committed an error when building the package to release on Live. These issues are now resolved.”

I can't get anything to work to the point of just giving up. The odd game I get the menu but as soon as the game starts my plasma comes up with a loss of sync signal even though I can still hear it. Do you have to change something in the set up .. flick it back to tv rather than hdtv? I have it running in 720p. Honestly i'm glad i kept my old xbox and will unpack and plug it all back in tomorrow. While I doubt it will get much play fifa and madden are not up to scratch on xbox yet and they are probably the 2 games I can't live without. The whole backwards compatablity thing is a total con by microsoft.

Everything seems to work fine for me, even in HD. I've only tested a few games(Halo 2, Jade Empire, SC: Chaos Theory) and they all worked fine. Didn't even have any significant frmae rate drops..

You at least have to hand it to Sony, the PS2 had perfect backwards compatibility. With the 360 it seems like they panicked too far into the design process and tried to get to work as best they could.

However, after battling with those wonky sound issues long enough, I traded Forza and another game in to get Ford Mustang which works fine. Shame as I reacted too soon, but there you go.

I'm going to stick with proper 360 games from now on, instead of reliving fond memories...

They didn't have to do backwards compatability at all.
At least they put in some work to get most popular games backwards compatable, and they're still working on more.

I'm not saying BC isn't a selling point, it's just that it's not really a requirement. It's more of a reward for consumers who owned the previous console.

I imagine Doom 3 was quite popular.
But as someone said before, to start with, MS probably just worked on the REALLY big name titles, and then added support for as many really easy ones(to emulate) as they had time for.
And the list is getting bigger, which surprised me. I assumed they were going to basically abandon BC after launch...

I reckon they should make sure that all of the top selling games as well as every Live game are BC, I'm rather disappointed that the first Star Wars: Battlefront is not on the list. So when I get my 360 and the Live trial that comes with it, won't be able to play that on Live, one of the games I've been so wanting to try on Live when I get it.

The latest patch works well. Previously their earlier patch saw some sound issues, but pretty much all is as it was on the old 'Box.
The only issues I've noticed are some shadows flicker under the cars, and the letter "M" flickers on some menu somewhere... not much at all.
I re-purchased Forza for the 360 and am loving it...

Does anyone else experience heaps of jaggies when playing BC games? I have a 26" Samsung LCD and the jaggies are so bad its actually unbearable to play them. I have the Xbox 360 switched to HDTV and 720P but it just looks terrible. Even Halo 2 which I though was supposed to upscale to 720P with AA. Any help is greatly appreciated although I have a feeling I'm beyond it ;)

Edit: OK just tested it and it seems to work well, which is great. I was using it through component before but VGA seems to have solved the jaggies problem. I do remember trying it before but it wouldn't let me play through VGA because it doesn't support 50Hz. Also tried Half-Life 2 but that doesn't seem to work due to its reliance on 50hz. Is there a list of games somewhere that deosn't work with the VGA cable?

There's maybe two or three decent titles here that I'd play on my 360 but the rest are garbage. I'm so glad I didn't trade or sell my old black box; there's too many great titles I wouldn't be able to play if I had.

Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on M$ but hey, if there were more decent 360 titles out there at the moment I wouldn't be complaining.

Yeah I think they do something to update game graphics. I swear my Star Wars: Battlefront game looks better on my 360 than it did on the old Xbox.

Edit: They better get some more of the known games BC. It seems my old Xbox may be dead. My parents borrowed it to test some games they bought for their xbox (that are not working on their console) and they say it is not playing games. Halo 1 needs to be fixed in BC. I want VGA 60Hz support god damn it I'm not changing cables over for it.

Same applies to Splinter Cell. Don't see why not considering SC2 and 3 work in 60Hz.

I just ordered a heap of games for the Xbox from DVD crave that are cheap so hopefully all/most of them will run on my 360 in 60Hz or else I'm going to have to plug in the old xbox!

from memory, Halo 2 is preloaded. In the Xbox Magazine that's out at the moment with Saints Row on the cover, it comes with something like 150+ BC game updates on the disc. Pretty much the same things I wanted in the first place...Sudeki, Bard's Tale, Enclave and Gladius. I also picked up Spartan: Total Warrior at one of those EB sales but can't be arsed setting my Xbox up again, so that too :)

Sounds like we're all hanging out for our favourite games to still make it onto the BC list. Last one was in August (2 months ago!). C'mon M$, I'm not going to forget cool games like Mercenaries, Republic Commando and that surprise package Beyond Good & Evil even when GOW and BIA 3 come out. They're just sitting in my games cab ready to go. BC is still important to some of us

The Australian list hasn't been updated yet, but it is active. I put Shenmue II in and it updated and booted just fine. Not in widescreen though, sorry Darksheer.

I'm confused about why they have the first Prince of Persia on that list, but none of the sequels. The three games I most wanted to be backwards compatible (Obscure, NHL Hitz Pro and Prince of Persia: Two Thrones (haven't finished it yet)) are nowhere to be seen!

The latest backwards compatibility update is now available over Xbox Live (or will be very soon.) This free update brings the complete list of original Xbox games that you can play on your Xbox 360 to way 300. Yeah Sam, I'd call it a "solid" update in that there's a lot of games with a lot of variety, but I don't think there's many standouts that people have been clamouring for, aside from Morrowind and the PGRs.

I'm still waiting on Spartan: Total Warrior personally. I bought it after the 360 was out cheap at EB and to this day haven't played it :(

Hey Sam I'm pretty sure the dreaded EB sell refurbished original Xbox consoles for $99 with a warranty of some sort, maybe not a bad option if you want to grab a big black box but have a little peace of mind that it isn't going to crap out in a week. I held onto my console just in case I ever want to play my old school Xbox games!

Err well they're using their own backwards compatibility for the downloadable xbox titles, so if they don't update it then there's no point selling the downloadable titles. This means that any emulation glitches present when you play games from the disc will be present when you download them too.

I recall MS saying a while back that they discontined development of backwards compatibility due to diminishing turns, most likely meaning it's no longer a critical selling point of the console and thus now useless.
