Good: Picture quality is amazing. Very functional remote. Great on screen menus. Easy to set up and operate.
Bad: Analogue set therefore no DVI/HDMI, could do with a few more component jacks. Big and Heavy. Hard to find.

Comments: A brilliant set, amazing picture quality. 1080i natively, very hard to beat.

Same as the thread starter, I have a KVHR36M31, the ONLY bad thing with this tv is that it doesnt have HDMI. I dont find size and weight to be a problem as it means no-one will ever steal it. And the tv not having HDMI isn't so bad because it will be a LONG time before either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray becomes a standard.

The Good: Nice picture for the price. fair range of inputs. hd tv and DVD's look great. menu easy to use. picture in picture mode good for watching both AFL games on a sat night and for hooking up 2 xboxs and having 8 players on the one screen! (crazy). burn protection function. looks good in the lounge room.

The Bad: Looks totatly crap watching sd tv, some solarisation from bad signals happens most when using crap cables. xbox dosen't look to good in some games but i am only using an s-video cable. some image retention for a few mins after playing xbox but barely noticable.

Overall:: Very happy with this screen as it suits all my needs. probably the best looking plasma i could get for that price. couldn't justify the extra $1000-2000 for a slightly better picture and features.

Note: The tuner built into the Samsung LCD is standard definition, and like most LCD screens the HD set-top-box is sold separately. This is most likely a strategic decision (read $$$ maximisation) made by manufacturers in an effort to help consumers solve their 'consumption problems' -thanks for looking out for us guys! At the moment (Oct 2004) the official Samsung HD set-top-box retails for about $400, but most cheaper brands should be compatible. If you decide to go for a different brand of set-top-box, please check that it is compatible with the Samsung (or other brand of LCD) and make note of its features. Thanks to Ingy for the fab question!

Just thought I would add the following link to a great site that sells this exact LCD screen (and the entire Samsung range) for the amazing price of $1479. The site is actually run by Xboxworld forum member Mastiha, who operates a state-of-the-art Xbox gaming lounge, and is an actual distributor for Samsung –neat’o! Note: Picture above is of overseas model. Please look below to see the Australian model. You will notice the black border around the screen is slightly angular and has the power button centered within this border, beneath the Samsung logo. I actually like this difference, but it is merely cosmetic.

Good:
This is a solid quality High-Definition LCD that has excellent picture and wide viewing angle. It’s great for DVDs, and xbox games played in progressive scan. Its fast response time, high contrast, rich display of colours, dark black tones, and a solid resolution in one collective package are a rare thing for LCDs within its price range (Oct 2005).

The remote is functional with numerous features and essential buttons are of sufficient size. The system menu is one of the easiest I have navigated with plenty of options. Tuning in TV stations is easy and can be automated.

Being an LCD the TV is very light and easy to move about. Its thin and sleek style is also very pleasing on the eyes. If you are looking for an LCD for the X360 this one is well recommended.

Bad:
Consoles that do not support progressive scan/High Definition such as the PAL (not NTSC) Nintendo Gamecube, output low resolution textures, which look poor. Fortunately the xbox supports progressive.

Like any LCD or plasma screen standard definition TV will look poor, however HD TV broadcast will produce DVD quality imagery.

Comments:
An excellent high quality LCD at a mid-level price range. It supports HDMI, VGA, and component, while a full range of progressive options will mean you receive the best picture from you console and DVD player. There are larger screen sizes available, starting from $3000.

EDIT: Here are some pictures of the Xbox 360 and Final Fantasy XI being played on a Samsung LCD. The Samsung screens shown below are the 58cm/ 23 Inch model (Model number LA23R51B). It looks as though Samsung are the official HDTV partner for the Xbox 360. See links:

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need a set-top-box to play High Definition games with the Xbox and Xbox 360?

A: No. A set-top-box is only required for watching high definition television broadcast. You can connect your games console or DVD player via the Component, HDMI (unknown at this stage), VGA, S-Video, or AV ports on the back of the LCD screen. Just make sure to enable 480p/720p/1080i on your console and the TV will do the rest.

Q: Do games look good on the Samsung or just the ones that support HD?

A: Re Xbox. All Xbox games support progressive scan (what is termed high definition), however for PAL Xbox consoles you will need to install a “soft mod” in order to enable the progressive function that was initially disabled when the console was released. This can be done by copying a specific game save file using an Xbox memory card. See XBW’s informative Soft Mod thread in the Hardware forum for more details.

Once progressive scan is enabled games will look great; albeit a rare few Xbox titles could do with some AA -fortunately the Xbox 360 supports AA.

Re Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 supports progressive scan out-of-the-box, so no modifications will be required. Just plug-and-play and let the TV do the rest. The X360 looks fantastic on this Samsung LCD TV. Using a set of VGA cables you can select the appropriate resolution and enjoy everything in High Definition. Games look far superior to those on Xbox I might add. Everything is smooth, bright, and vibrant. The results are impressive.

The Good:

- Great buy for the price at the time, especially given the size!
- 8ms response time is great! Have never had tearing/blurring/ghosting
- Brightness may seem low compared to other units, but it's super bright!
- Speakers are really powerful, though I never use them

The Bad:

- Really doesn't handle large amounts of black/dark colours very well
- could do with more component inputs
- no HDMI or digital optical/coaxial inputs

Overall::

I just took the leap and bought this and while it's probably not as flash as other things on the market in the price range now, we're going on 6 months old and I've been really happy with the performance since then. I watch a lot of downloaded TV shows on it and they look absolutely fantastic, and while my Xbox games look a little washed out in component, I'm hoping to get the HD softmod set up soon! Overall I'd give the TV a 7/10 probably!

Current Setup:

- The above TV
- LG 5.1 Home Theatre System
- Xbox w/ Official High-Definition Kit + cheap-ass cables
- LG DV7821P (no progressive scan)

Pros:
+ Truely awesome picture quality
+ Value for money
+ Card reader
+ Looks great

Cons:
- RGB/PC input is a waste of time. It can not accept a digital TV signal, only 640x480, 800x700 and 1024x768 PC signals. Not only that but it displays the PC screen with a great big ugly grey border that is 3cm on both top and bottom and 13cm on each side! Why it can not accept a digital TV signal through the RGB/TV input is a mystery to me.
- Very heavy (76kg)

EDIT: 02 Dec 05
Consumer Warning
I sent back the first one of thes TVs I received because it was defective. It had a visible curve in the bottom right corner of the picture which was most noticable when watching DVDs.

My replacement Toshiba 36JW9UA finally arrived today after waiting another 10 days and it turned out to be far worse than the previous one.

The curve in the corner of the picture was gone but I didn't even have to connect any video cables to see what I would call 'extreme' yellowish discolouration and smudging of the 'blue screen'. This discolouration would be obvious to blind man and continued when watching a TV program.

This particular TV is extremely defective and Harvey Norman are picking it up today and taking it away. Not only that but I am so disappointed with this Toshiba model that I am getting a full refund and pursuing a purchase of the elusive Sony KVHR36M31 which is what I should have done in the first place.

Bump! See edits to my post.

I can't believe it! Harvey Norman sent one guy on his own to pick up my TV. Not suprisingly he bounced it down the front steps of my Queenslander home and smashed the hell out of it! LOL!

I still got all my money back, in cash, after they tried to rip me off the cost of delivery mind you.

I just bought this plasma on the weekend. I got mine for $3700, it was on display for $4300. The guys at HN are legends (even though a little stupid).

I have to say that I was surprised when i got it home. It looked "nice enough" in the shop, but when i got it home and got some HD TV into... wow! Upscaling seems to be great as well as DVD's look awesome. HDMI input is a bonus, and there is a definite difference between component and DVI coming out of my set top.

For the price it is better than panels worth $3700 for 42" HD is pretty damn fine.

Panasonic PTAE 700E projector

15341

A couple of people mentioned projectors but nobody has chosen one as their primary display. To get the most out of a projector you ideally need:

1. A dark room

Good

Image is freaking huge
Amazing crisp picture
Movies are awesome
Games are awesome - but you may have to decrease picture size because you get so dizzy!!! (It takes 2 seconds with the zoom lense).
Unit takes up no space

Bad

Blacks not as black as they are on other display types
Sunlight is not your friend
Costly to replace bulbs - great help at Pitt Street Mall Bing Lee though - they will give me a free bulb if it goes before 2000 hours are up no questions asked.

That Panasonic projector is the model I want when I buy my own place, it looks totally sweet. It's frustrating how you could spent $6k on a decent 100" projector setup when 40" lcd tellys cost much the same as that, but projector stuff isn't really good to set up when you're renting...

I got the same TV as Darksheer, the Samsung LCD which is the model used for X360 kiosks, but I went for the 81cm model. Incredibly pretty picture, currently $2699 at Myer.

Here's a pic of my XBL on it.

The old tv vs the new tv!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/aelfin/Xbox/DSC00197.jpg

In the last two shots it's running the music visualiser.

Also tried plugging in a Gamecube playing ResEvil4, a PS2 playing PoP The Two Thrones, and an Xbox playing Burnout Takedown, with varying results.

ResEvil 4 looked uglier than it did on the 68cm I played it on (not the other tv shown in the photo above).

PoP looked pretty good, better than I expected it would, I think it's playable in widescreen, but for some reason the picture was offset. IE there were bars at the LEFT and BOTTOM rather than the top and bottom or left and right. Bizarre.

Burnout Takedown was really kinda ugly, and I have no idea why :(. It was in pretty widescreen, but the colours looked all wrong, and the text looked a bit jaggy and stuff. Another reason to just rebuy it for X360 probably :P.

This particular TV is extremely defective and Harvey Norman are picking it up today and taking it away. Not only that but I am so disappointed with this Toshiba model that I am getting a full refund and pursuing a purchase of the elusive Sony KVHR36M31 which is what I should have done in the first place.

Skin.

No good to hear about your toshi.

Regarding the KVHR36M31, I hope you find one. I have one of these TV's myself and I would have to say that it is one of, if not the best picture (quality wise) money can buy for under $5000. I picked up mine from HN about 6 months ago for around $2700, not bad considering when released rrp was $5999.

I have not got a 360 yet, but I have spoken with a few people that have the US equivalent (Sony XBR series, 910/960) and they tell me that I will be gobsmacked when I see the PQ that this set offers with 360, I have watched HD through other sources on this screen and I can tell you that the super fine dot pitch tubes on these puppies are outstanding when given a HD source.

6 months of ownership I can honestly say that I would not swap this set for any other type brand or technology screen at the same size (86cm), I sit about 2 metres away from mine in my SuperSac and use a set of Logitech Z-5500 speakers for sound.

All the advice I can give to you is find one of these beautiful sets, and BUY BUY BUY, you WILL NOT be dissapointed

Edit:

Here is a pic of my setup, not the best quality pic(camera wise) but will give you an idea of the beautiful color reproduction this set offers. This is in 576p, just a dvd run in progressive, I have to say as well SD on this set does it no justice at all.

Just a quetion aelfin, what size tv is your old tv in that picture. I just want to see how an 81cm widescreen compares to a normal 68cm crt (currently what I have).

For some reason I can't judge it to well in the shops for size.

I'm thinking of either 81cm or 91cm LCD tv...I just don't know.

The old one is a 51cm crt.
I had thought 81cm wasn't going to be big enough, when looking at them in stores they just don't seem that big. But when it's on it's own away from other TVs in your house, it's pretty big :).

Coolio!

I just need to purchase a new LCD with a HD box, and I'll be set.

I'll either go for one of the LG type one's with an inbuilt HD receiver or bargain a deal with the samsung to include a HD box.

I think the new Sony Bravia's come with a Hd box, but they are quite expensive.

Yep, the Samsung LCD's are great.

I've purchased 20 of the 58CM ones to use in our Xbox lounge.

For those who are interested, we will also be setting up an Ebay store selling Samsumg screens and here are some indications of pricing:

^That's a big tele. I guess my problem would be that I sit at max 2 metres away from the tv. A tv of that size from that viewing distance I guess would be grainy and or pixelated...but I don't know. The sets in shops never have a 720p or 1080i signal set up for it or at best they run a dvd off composite cabling....it does the tv no justice.

Anybody considering a flat screen should really consider PROJECTION! The image quality is first class and at least half the price. You can have either a small image or a freaking huge one. Small image is amazingly crisp.

The LCD picture I have is far better than any of the LCD's on the market in my opinion.Worth a thought....

I have a Sony HX32, which is virtually identical to the HR36 posted by the thread starter except for 3 major differences:

1) It's a 32" not a 36"
2) It doesn't have a memorystick reader
3) The resolution of the comb filter is lower (Uses a different type)

The resolution issue only makes a difference in 720p and 1080i where the HR series has a cleaner image.

The HX32 cost me about $2200 a year ago. Excellent screen, very good picture, runs my modded Xbox in 720p quite happily and looks very impressive playing upsampled DVDs through XBMC.

I had a play with one of the Samsung 23" LCD units that they're using for the Xbox360 launch, and I was very unimpressed. Feeding a 720p image into it did not look very crisp at all, it seemed to have contrast issues and due to the combination of the image scaling and "lack" of colours, images always exhibited a slight "blockiness". With most LCD screens using the ridiculous 1366x768 resolution rather than what seems to be a more sensibile 1280x720 (you know, a standard, 720p) - ALL images sent to the screen must be scaled to fit. The further away from 1366x768, the more it scales, and I suspect its scaling algorithms aren't very good (hence why a normal 576i PAL TV signal looks so terrible).

You really need to audition LCD/Plasma screens with something you already know, some of them are very fussy about what input types they're happy with. The Sony Bravias look fantastic, but I've only seen them running their demo DVDs which may well be some sort of proprietry thing, plus the screens cost a fortune. I'm not sure LCDs are mature enough yet, but then, I'm a picky bugger, despite not having the financial backing to be as picky as I'd like to be.

I don't know if someone has asked, but how would the 360 looks if you hook it up to a 19" LCD monitor. It's a 3ms refresh rate.

Is that possible? And if it is, will it look ok?

Thanx, dej

3ms? is that possible... yet?

Unless your screen has component inputs Green Red and Blue RCA connexions (hey, some have) you'll need a VGA pack. (http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/) And yes it will look fine, just really small.

Jarlexle, nice set. I'm trying to see if there are any big differences between yours and the entry level version (the one with the angled bottom... mine) the on paper specs are more or less identical, apart from the "DACS - Dynamic Acoustic Chamber System" whatever that is and the whole aluminium thing. Hmm... oh well.

this is a great thread!!!

im going for a 32 inch LCD and trying to decide between

the new LG with HDbox integrated currently $2898 at JB - very sexy look

the panasonic - $2999

the sony bravia - $2999 <- does the bravia come with the HDBox - if it does and i can also get a discount from this price i am totally sold.

which one would people go for?

and i find it quite amazing that the whole lot of us are all buying new TVs just for a console.

Judging by the sony website, I'd have to say that not only do the Bravia series not have built in tuners, but the combos available with the tuners are rather pricey.

Of those I'd suggest the LG. Although I highly recommend the Samsung range of LCD displays, of course you'd need to get a seperate tuner as well (If that's really your thing)

LA26R51B 66 cm, 16:9, 3000:1 Dynamic C/R, 500 CD/m2 , 1366x768, 1xHDMI, DNIe3, MCC, HDTV Ready, 1 Tuner (PIP), Teletext, 2x Comp, W-XGA, PC in.VESA compliant - $1,479.00

LA32R51B 81cm, 16:9, 3000:1 Dynamic C/R, 500 CD/m2 , 1366x768, 1x HDMI, DNIe3, MCC, HDTV Ready, 1 Tuner (PIP), Teletext, 2x Comp, W-XGA, PC in.VESA compliant - $1,999.00

LA40R51B 101cm, 16:9, 3000:1 Dynamic C/R, 500 CD/m2 , 1366x768, 1x HDMI, DNIe3, MCC, HDTV Ready, 1 Tuner (PIP), Teletext, 2x Comp, W-XGA, PC in.VESA compliant - $3,599.00

Eftpos or credit card would be 3% extra.

Given that the 26" Samsung seems to be hovering around the 1600-1700 price at just about ever major retailer I'm wondering if the RRP hasn't dropped?

Interesting, may I ask what you were using to feed the 720 image to the Samsung? I'm not having a go at you, I have the 26 inch version but haven't really experienced the blockiness you are talking about, nor the 'lack' of colours. I agree the native resolution is a bit wank though but I couldn't really get around it unfortunately as so many brands incorporate it atm. But the picture def also depends on the quality of the product you're connecting to/feeding into the tv - eg I tried out my brother's low end hotchip hdstb on my tv and the image was def not as crisp as my own higher model hotchip stb, and showed some blockiness, which was clearly evident when I plugged the set back into my brother's dell monitor (2405FPW - very good monitor!!!).

I also find it depends on what you watch and what channel. I was in Jb the other day, where all the tvs were being fed from the same hdstb (didn't know what brand/model it was, but judging by the pictures an average one), and all of them certainly had faint signs of blockiness when displaying the hd demo that rolls over and over for the most of the day on channel 7 (it wasn't the greatest signal - why oh why do stores always feed absolute shite into their tv display models, it's a turn off and doesn't show the potential of the sets - myer city store, who have an enormous range, is one such culprit!!!!). However, judging from what was on display by face value, the samsung imo opinion had 2nd best picture on par with the 26 inch panasonic viera model which is more expensive The only 26 inch model which I felt bettered the samsung's picture was the 26 inch Sony Bravia KLVV26A10 (http://www.sony.com.au/catalog/product.jsp?id=KLVS26A10), but that was over $3100, double the price I had paid for the samsung.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for...and you pay for quality! My 26 inch Samsung is certainly not the greatest lcd around, and will no doubt be superseded in the the next few months by newer, better technology. But it is certainly a good all rounder for the $1500 mark and I am more than happy with it!!

when i visit the TV sets at shops i can't see the difference on an LCD or Plasma either. their channel 7 HD loop doesnt look that great except on a DLP Rear Pro - looks stunning on those TVs but i they take up a lot of room.

im hoping when people say there's a massive difference playing xbox360 games on a normal TV and a HD TV that its true cause thats the only reason im getting a new TV.

I've played my 360 on a Teac 68cm CRT and on my Samsung 42" HD Plasma, and trust me it is well worth it. When you first turn it on i think the 360 is set to 640 X 480 then you bump it up and 1024 X 768 and above look amazing!

Came across these threads whilst ironically looking for info on vga cable for the dreamcast :chortle:

Anyway, these pics really show off the 360 on high def sets (plasma, lcd, dlp, projector, monitor) and thought I'd post them. For those of us with the 22/26 inch Samsungs (Darksheer etc) it looks like our tv features in both of the threads (although give or take some might be newer models then our LA26R51B). Also there are pics of the Dell 24 inch monitor in action too - I know Shane and a number of others were interested in it. My brother has one and it is good value if you ask me :D

twiggy, would be interested to hear if you think it's worth getting a 360 if I only have a 68cm CRT?
ie is it disappointing at all? look a lot better than the x-box?

I'm deciding whether I shoud hold off on the 360 until I get a 42" plasma or similar sized LCD, which may not be until sometime later in the year or even next year.

Don't get me wrong the 360 still has a better picture on a CRT than the original Xbox. Maybe not as much as i expected, but without a HD TV you are definately missing out. It looks a lot clearer and sharper and you can beef up the resolution to whatever you like (well whatever the 360 will let you). I think its to do with the crappy composite plugs. The difference from using them on a CRT to using the HD VGA plug on a 42" plasma at 1024x768 is alot and you want ever want to go back. I suppose I would still get a 360 if i only had a standard CRT though.

for sure you should still get a 360 at launch - when you make the switch from SD to HD later on - you will give your system new life.

plus there's xbox live arcade, wireless controllers and sequels of xbox games that should definitely be played - PGR3, oblivion, DOA4 etc.

Bigger is better seems to be the trend in this thread but for those looking for a smaller HDTV my local Bing Lee was selling the Samsung 23" for $1199 when I was down there earlier today.

yer i think at that price, the 23" Samsung is a worthy unit.

only thing is, on the samsung site it says it runs at 1366x768 but doesnt specifically mention that it supports 720p etc etc

why, if it does, wouldnt they list that in the specs?

http://www.samsung.com/au/products/tv/lcdtv/la23r51b.asp
http://www.samsung.com/au/products/tv/lcdtv/la26r51b.asp

the 23" one, at $1199, is cheaper than the DELL 24" monitors, doubles as a tv and is a bit easier to accept as a PC monitor as well, especially as it has TV features also.

hey mastiha, how much can you do the 23" for?

It mentions it for the 26" one, but the first bullet point on the 23" one is blank? :p

On the 26" page it says "High Definition Inputs (1080i, 720p, 576p)" up the top, to the right of the picture and it also says it on the features page, it's the first bullet point. :)

Not on the 23" one though?

Yes, the 23” does not have HDMI if I remember correctly. I think this was the only limitation of this screen, but I can’t be sure. Although, I remember there being something else, too... Mind you the 23” screen is the same one M$ use for their Xbox 360 kiosks.

Keep in mind the 26” is just a little bit more and has HDMI, which might be a nice idea for DVD.

Yes, definitely worth it considering the Playstation 3 is rumoured to have 2 HDMI outputs. Well, thats reason enough for me to consider HDMI as a major selling point.

hey mastiha, how much can you do the 23" for?

The reason why you may be finding the 23" Samsung cheap at the moment is stores are probably trying to sell their stock on hand.

I've been told that they will be discontinued shorty.

At this stage we can do the 26" Samsung at a cash price of $1479. I will revise this price if I receive any updated pricelists.

hmm was hoping to stick to my limit of only around $1100, i see the benefits of HDMI etc but this thing is really only going to be used as a PC and Xbox 360 gaming monitor.. maybe.. MAYBE, it might have the occasional DVD thrown through it, but probably little to no tv.

Well if you will be mainly using it as a monitor/games station, and I guess you would only be sitting a few feet away from it, perhaps the 23” would be suitable. HDMI shouldn’t be the final decision maker, but you will have component and VGA. I guess it come down to what size you would prefer.

hey guys,

just bought this panel.... this arvo..... being delivered tomorrow morning.

Panasonic 106cm (42 inch) HD Viera Widescreen Plasma TV

http://www.cnet.com.au/i/r/2005/hometheatre/tvs/22051442/sc001.jpg

* High-Definition Input (1080i, 720p, 576p)
* VIERA Colour Management System
* Sub-Pixel Controller
* 8.6 Billion Viewable Colours [2,048³ shades of gradation]
* 8th Generation HD Plasma Panel

Inputs:

SD Card (1)
Composite (4)
S-Video (2)
Component (2)
VGA (1)
HDMI (1)

Well I was a bit apprehensive about buying this as it only had 1024x768 resolution. But after having researched panels for the last two months - this had the best TV picture out there in my opinion and on par with the pioneer and that was $2000 more. I wish it had 1366x768 like the LCD panels, but the 32" sony bravia was the same price as this, and i just thought the extra size was better value. Plus i thought it had a better picture too. Its cost me an arm and a leg - so please god xbox360 better be good! I paid $4170 at Knox Dick Smith Powerhouse for the panel, 5 year warranty and a panasonic HD set top box.

If anyone has used this panel for xbox360 can you please write up some of your experiences please.

Hey there, long time listener, first time caller.

I'm after some advice if i may be so bold.

I'm looking at buying a 42PD8800TA Hitachi 42" Plasma. The resolution is advertised as 1024x1024. This seems very odd to me and i havn't seen any other TV's out there with a 1:1 ratio with the reolution.

Can somone explain to me is this resolution a good thing? And will this TV be a good companion for the 360?

I'm not buying the TV specifically for the 360, I'm just fast tracking my purchase of a plasma because of the 360.

Also what does 1080i(50/60) means? I know what 720p and 1080i mean but I've never seen the (50/60) after them until I stumbled apon this TV.

hey dude

1. from all reports the hitachi plays stuff just like any other plasma - it has a great scaler built in and most stuff looks great. I didnt get it because i figured id stick with the majority on the resolution. it seems that 42" inch plasmas mostly have the 1024x768, and lots of people have been pleased with the picture. also the 1024x1024 resolution just means it has rectangular pixels, when stuff is scaled it will look normal - not stretched or dwarfed etc.

2. yes its a good panel. ive seen it with my eyes.

3. me too - i HAD to have a nice panel to play the xbox360. plus i bought it now so i could burn in the 100 hours before the xbox360 arrives.

4. 1080i(50/60) means that it displays 1080i in either 50 or 60 Hz. which is only a good thing because DOA4 US copy (which is region free) is only compatiable with 50Hz.

if you visit www.dtvforum.info they will be able to help you more...

Thanks dude.

So will a 1080i signal only get scaled back to 1024, therefore minimal difference, or does it scale back to the next available signal standard?

And will the 1024 resolution be able to play a 720p signal with no scaling?

The idea of using a projector as a display seems to be quickly brushed aside in here. Some of you guys should reconsider your options, you do not need a dedicated home theatre room to operate one of these things. I live (rent) in a small 2 bedroom apartment and I have just purchased and set up an XGA projector for use in the lounge room, the room is barely 3.5 metres wide and yet I now have a 7 foot diagonal screen to watch dvds and play xbox on..stoked. it doesnt need to be ceiling mounted so yes you can set one up in a rental property, I have the projector sitting on a small platform between the lounge seats, minimal space required.

The camera used to take this is crap to say the least and as any projector owner will agree, the projected images when seen in person are tenfold better. This was shot with all surrounding lights turned on.

Contrast: 2000:1

Compatibility: HDTV, Component Video, SVideo

Unit comes with a bonus Component to VGA Converter for progressive scan dvd input, is quiet to operate and the bulbs are cheaper than most projectors.

and the best part, the unit only cost me ~$1600 (have seen them going for $1500)
without exaggerating it truelly does feel like you have a giant LCD or plasma sitting in you lounge room.

The screen is a DIY job and cost me all of $50 to build, built frame and stretched blackout cloth across frame, painted frame .. done

There are a few catches with projectors however, some people may see a slight rainbow effect on very high contrast scenes when using a DLP projector, and the bulbs can be expensive depending on the unit and usage.

Hi Guys,

I own a Panasonic TX 76PW300A.

I just got my xbox360 and can't get 1080i mode to work. My TV claims to support 1080i though. Its currently running in 480p... it doesn't support 720p :(.

When I try to put it into 1080i, the screnn gets all messed up... any idea's? similar experiences??

thanks.

I thought true HD was 1080p not 1080i. Or is that only PAL or something (So you'll be restricted to NTSC Blu-ray and HDDVD if you want true HD)

Anyway heres mine

Best plasma i've seen with my own eyes in 50" was alongside a fujitsu, panasonic and LG, the pioneer was clearer, brighter and tastier looking and the blacks had so much more detail

My dad just got a samsung LCD tv and they are really good too.

Worth every $. I really wanted the 61" version but it's about $1000 ever inch you go over 50" =(

Im happy with it, i've had some burn in scares but the stuff left on the screen seem to be completely gone in a couple of days. =P I've got about 100ish hours on it so aparently the burn in risk isn't so big anymore.

ps yes 2m is way to close to sit. =P My living room is bigger the other way so I gotta rotate it 90degrees (When I can be bothered).

Probably because the Panasonic may only support 1080i at 50Hz. The 360 only outputs at 60Hz with Hi Def output.

"Enjoy the exceptional picture quality of a true High Definition TV signal and be fully prepared for HD sources like HDTV broadcast, Blu-ray DVD or HDVD. HD ready is a protected label that offers picture quality beyond that of progressive scan. It conforms to strict standards laid out by EICTA to offer a HD screen that displays the benefits of resolution and picture quality of a High Definition TV signal. It has a universal connection for both analog YPbPr and uncompressed Digital connection of DVI or HDMI, supporting HDCP. It can display 720p, and 1080i signals at 50 and 60Hz."

The Only problem with it is you have to buy a Set Top box that has HDMI input or you run out of plugs in the back on the TV, for the HD 360 plugs.

The Ambilights are great aswell, you can have it set so when you watch a movie the lights go with the movie, eg. So if the screen is dark the lights go down, and then someone on the movie turns a flashlight on and pans from Left to Right, the lights behind the TV go from Left to Right.

Cost: Around $3,000 we got it for $2,600 from The Good Guys, the Set Top Box was around $1,300 so a total of $3,900

Bought this TV last week and i must say that it is absolutely awesome. From the great design to when you first turn it on and the TV programs the channels in itself. I wasn't too keen on the 360's graphics until i played Kameo on this TV. It's awesome and with a 3yr warrenty you can't go wrong.

Since purchasing my Xbox all those months ago, I've had it set up on two different HD panels - an LG HD tuner-integrated Plasma and, currently, a Samsung LCD Monitor.

LG 42PX5D (http://au.lge.com/md/product/prodcategorylist.do?actType=detail&currPage=1&categoryId=0200000101&parentCategoryId=0200000001&categoryLevel=3&productId=1100000727&productImage=&modelCodeDisplay=42PX5D&selectModel=1100000727)

http://au.lge.com/download/product/addon/42PX5D%20TITLE%20black.jpg

Purchased for 3100'ish with the extended 5 year warranty prior prior to the World Cup - got it delivered on Origin 1 Wednesday, which was handy :D

Samsung 215TW (http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCD_Digital/LS21DPWABXAA.asp)

http://www.futurelooks.com/uploads/326/215tw_11.jpg

And a review (http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=3081).

Purchased on the weekend for $889 from Harris Technology. First unit had a dead pixel, they replaced it on the spot the next morning - replacement is perfect, typing this on it.

Of the two, the plasma is my favourite. Bigger screen obviously, and possibly because of the lower native resolution, the Xbox looks far, far better on it. I'm going to get a hold of the VGA cable for the Samsung screen as apparently the component inputs I'm currently using are a bit flaky, so hopefully that sharpens things up a bit. Both screens support 1080i, but I have read that the Samsung downscales devices plugged in via component, so that might explain the huge difference in visual quality also. Will post back with some feedback once I've got the VGA cable installed - don't think it's fair to do a final comparison if I'm not giving the Samsung a fair go, as within a Windows environment, it's the best LCD panel I've ever used.

If I can be arsed, I will take some photos of the Samsung running the 360, but the LG won't be running it again any time soon - got a hold of the Samsung specifically so I didn't have to negotiate a few hours on the plasma for gaming. Ahh this thread brings back some nice memories. The first time I saw the PGR HDR effect at the end of one of the Bridge runs in New York, I was stunned.

Edit: forgot to mention, also have Foxtel Digital, which I believe is still bog-standard SD, connected to the plasma via a SCART-Component cable, and while not perfect, the component cables have done an amazing job of sharpening up the image.

Hey, I've had the Samsung LA32T51BX (http://www.samsung.com/nz/products/tv/lcdtv/la32t51b.asp?page=Specifications)for a a few months now and am very happy with it. But my ability to adjust the settings to any reasonable level are crap. I only use it for gaming and the occasionaly DVD, but the gaming always seems to look a touch dark. Could I get some advice on settings?

I've also been looking into projectors a bit lately. Are there projectors that put out 720p or 1080i pictures? Are they okay for gaming?
