View Full Version : Buying a NASTY 51cm TV? Suggestions?
Hey all...im looking at buying a nasty 51cm TV for my room. By Nasty i mean by the likes of Magnavox (from Kmart). Im looking at spending around $150 - $200.
Anyone got any thoughts? or links?

My grandma bought a Teac 51cm from Kmart for $179 (reduced from $250) a few weeks ago and its a great TV, much better than I thought it would be. I dont think they still have them anymore tho
Look around. Between Kmart, Target, Big W and Strathfield you can get them from anywhere between $100 and $150 from time to time.

I wouldn't say Magnavox are nasty, they are huge in the US.
My sister has a 68cm Magnavox and it's never had a problem. She's had it now for 4 years. I have a 54cm Konka that I got for $196 and it comes with the bells and whistles that most tv's come with these days. I'm very happy with it :)

Yeah, I've got a 68cm Magnavox TV in the spare room at my house and it does the job quite nicely. Quite pleased with it considering the price I paid for it. :)
Well i think Kmart is the go now...as they have a 15% off store wide sale coming close. So im ganna go for it. And for the guy who said buy a good tv. Im not interested in spending $300+ on a Tv that will do exactly the same thing. And if the TV does screw up, highly doubt, its what $140 ? Nothing....

My dvd player is DEC and I've had it 5 years. It's one of the big chunky ones, but it plays all the formats that new fancy players have. I had a problem with it in the first year cos the laser mount was made from plastic and it melted :(. They took it back and replaced the laser mount and I've never had a problem since :D
I don't mind buying cheap electricals (especially tv's etc). If they last 5 years then I've got myself a bargain. I can't justify paying over $500 for something that is only go to last as long as the cheap tv. It may not have a screen the size of a football field but it does the job I require it to and it would look bloody ridiculous in a 2 bedroom unit ;).

well, you could argue that if you spend say $200 on a crappy TV and it breaks in the next 4 (?) years then you have to fork out another $200 for another crappy TV which will do the same, when you could be better off going the little bit extra, say $500, and get a better TV that will last. it's up to you though.

But how will you know that it will last any longer?
Before I owned the Konka I had a Teac 51cm and it lasted 10 years. The tube was the only thing that ended the life of the TV and it was going to cost more to get a guy in to repair it than it was to buy another TV.
TV repairmen are almost non existant. It's also cheaper to replace a dvd/video player now.

but when ( IFFFFF) it breaks down...you can spend another $200 and in 4 years time $200 will get u a l33t nasty TV!

If you go to kmart get the 51cm audiosonic it has component input, flatscreen and priced at $170. I'm picking one up for my youngest son to play his xbox on.

The recent Retravision catalogue had some good prices on TVs as well. Similar to the type (and price) MiNiStRy just posted. Definately get component input if you can.
I was going to buy one, but I somehow managed to convince my parents to trade my old TV for the 68" in their room.
Yeah component sounds nice, but would i really use it? i would rather S-VIDEO on there...

Also has s-video included, i think it even has scart. Component is the norm now with most dvd players and consoles. If you get one without you will be regretting it later on.

Component is the standard now, and I'm pretty sure it's better than S-Video. Anything less would become obsolete fast, especially with the onset of HDMI.
In terms of component do u mean Y W R plugs?

Yellow, white and red is composite. Component is similar, but is red, blue and green.

Im pretty sure I've got the same TV as Skooby! The Konka works a treat! $179 I believe! Has S-Video but no component.
In no way is Component the standard now. And yes it is better than S-Video. its recommended for higher def TV's, projectors etc. All i need is just a tv that its standard that will do the trick. Component wont become standard for another 5+ years i rekon.

Almost all TVs and DVD players today have component input. It is definately the best way to go, especially if you want your TV to last a while.
You could get a TV that just "does the job," but TVs with component input are pretty common and not that expensive, plus you might regret it down the track. Either way, it's your call.
Yeah i spose we will have to see how Xbox 360 and ps3 etc, what they come out with.

If they're high definition, they would have to AT LEAST support component.

All games consoles, Xbox 360, DVD players and most Digital TV Set Top Boxes have component as well as S-Video.
With any TV I wouldn't touch composite, I would go with at least S-Video. If you can get a TV with component go for it, SCART RGB is also the same quality, both being full quality while S-Video is a step down and composite an even bigger step down further.
I also highly recommend widescreen but I guess the TV's mention here a quite cheap anyway. Think of how much stuff you watch in widescreen or is available in widescreen.
Most programs on DTV are in widescreen, DVD movies are widescreen and there are a lot of widescreen Xbox games too. So it may be worth while.

Indeed Sam, indeed!
OK well, let's just play this out then, shall we.
You probably will not find out much about audiosonic. It's a no name brand and you'll probably get a few years use out of it. They aren't made to keep working five years from now, but you never no. I'd say a two to three year life span. With a brand like that don't expect miracles. But if you just want it to plug your VCR, DVD player, and a console, sure it will work. It's getting harder to find good CRT TV now that LCD and Plasma have been out for so long, so if you're on a tight budget, or are just not very concerned with high definition playback than that CRT should do you well.
Exact same story for the $300 sanyo. However, it should have a better life span and has a known reputation, but there may be very little difference in performance. But with that said the sanyo probably has a better build quality. I'd say go with the Sanyo if it's within your budget. It will probably have a better warranty and service delivery in the event of something going wrong with it. If the TV comes with a component port that would be a bonus, so check that first.
