Because this site is against discussion of mod chips, and posting links to mod chip/home
brew dev sites, I can't give individual credit to those who released this information
originally. If you're reading this and are one of those people, I extend my deepest thanks
to you for doing what you do, to help your fellow members of the Xbox community and rest
assured, I'm trying to put it into my own words as much as possible though some documents
may be directly quoted.

To any representatives of developers/publishers/distributors, this thread is for general
knowledge educational purposes so people know what's in their Xbox and of what quality it is
when purchasing one, and for those who are just plain curious about their console.

I deeply respect your property and am heavily against piracy, and will try to keep sensitive
issues as vague as possible. Once again, this thread is for general knowledge education.

I was going to say which parts indicate which version Xbox, but I remember that 99% of
you trying to find out, are doing so because you want it modded.

Because this and that site is against mod discussion, I won't be telling what
indicates what version Xbox you have. Don't bother trying to contact me for info as I'll
simply ignore you and place a block on your username.

The only version references in this thread are to help explain the production history of
the factories.


If Shane or any of the mods/admins feel that this thread contains info that shouldn't be

Serial Number, where your Xbox was made

This part is to help you know where your Xbox came from.

The sticker on the bottom of the Xbox with the barcode contains the 12-digit serial number &
date of manufacturing.

1 Production line within factory
166356 Number of Xbox within week and factory

2 Last digit of year
09 Week of year (starting Mondays)
03 Factory number

There are 3 factories. Mexico is 02, Hungary is 03, and China is 05

So this mean that the Xbox belonging to that serial number was made in the 9th week of 2002,
was in the first production line, and was number 166 356 of that week.


Factories, info and history of them

This will give you brief info on what has happened with the factories. I was going to
include how exactly Xbox's are made, but decided not to as the information may be too
sensitive.


Mexico

10/2001 - 110V 1.0 Thomson drive Xboxes start being manufactured for the US and Canada.

01/2002 - Same manufacturing but with JP region locking is started, for Japan.

04/2002 - Production lines 1 & 6 are closed and moved to China, while the other 4 continue
production. 50% of all Mexican produced Xboxes contain Philips DVD-Roms, while the other 50%
continue to have Thomson's.

10/2002 - The four production lines switch to manufacturing ver 1.1 Xboxes

12/2002 - 14 months and 7 million Xboxes after production started, the Mexican factory is
shut down.


Hungary

10/2001 - 110V 1.0 Thomson drive Xboxes start being manufactured for the US and Canada.

01/2002 - Factory switches over to manufacturing 220V Xboxes for Europe and Australia.

05/2002 - 9 months and 3 million Xboxes after production started, the factory is shut down
and all 4 production lines are moved to China.


China

08/2002 - 220V 1.1 Philips/Thomson Xboxes start being manufactured for Europe and Australia.

09/2002 - Samsung drives are now being used, which most of the factories Xboxes at the time
contained. Some however still contain Philips and Thomson ones.

11/2002 - Production 110V Xboxes for Japanese, Yanks, and Canadians starts.

12/2002 - Production line 1 switches to 1.2.

02/2003 - Production line 6 switches to 1.2.

03/2003 - Production line 1 switches to 1.3.

04/2003 - Production line 6 switches to 1.3.

07/2003 - Production line 1 switches to 1.4.

08/2003 - Production line 1 switches to 1.5.


HDD and DVD-Rom info

This part is to help you know what HDD and DVD-Rom is in you Xbox, and to show once and for
all that not all Xboxes in bundle packs are the same.


General Info

Despite popular belief, Xboxes still contain Philips/Thomson DVD-Roms and 10GB HDDs (alot
of people still think that these are only in launch US Xboxes).

The amount of Xboxes which have what DVD-Roms, can be broken down in percentages:



19% Thomson
27% Philips
54% Samsung

As you can see, despite Samsungs being used more by the factories, ALOT of Xboxes
still contain the older/crappier drives.

As for the HDDs there are 4 different kinds used, 2 10GB Seagate models & 2 8GB Western
Digital models. 20GB HDDs have been rumoured, but there is no confirmation what-so-ever and
thus, remain nothing more than rumours.

Can the xbox read CD-R's, cd-rw's, etc?
This all depends on your dvd drive. There are three types of dvd drive your xbox could have, the thomson, phillips or samsung. The samsung is known to have a high success rate with cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, and dvd-rw. There is a lower success rate with dvd+r and dvd+rw on samsung drives. The philips drive is known to have a similar success rate to the samsung, except it may have a better chance of reading dvd+ media, and a lower success rate of reading cd-r. The thomson drives have a very low success rate with cd-r, however will read some cd-rw (eg verbatim) and has a high success rate with all dvd formats. Please note that all of these factors can vary depending on the media you use/how you burn, etc.

To identify the type of xbox dvd drive you have you can use the information posted by Rockman.EXE or the following picture:

Two makes and 4 models of drives are used. Either a
Seagate, 10GB, average seek time of 8.9ms, or a
Western Digital, 8GB, average seek time of 12.1ms.
All are single-platter designs spinning at 5,400 rpm, with 2MB buffers.

DVD drive:
Either a Thomson, Philips or Samsung made drive.
Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) drive. 5x speed at the outer perimeter, 2x on the inner perimeter (1x = 1250KB/s).
Specified as being able to read DVD, CD and CDRW discs.
Games formatted in DVD-9 (9GB single sided, double layer) and written from the outer perimeter of the discs, inwards.

Don't matter what size HDD you have people. The Xbox only uses 8gb, and gives you 5gig - E: drive is the saves partition and for music. 5gig is plenty :p

Even though they both only use 8Gb, the Seagate is a fair bit faster. Would it be noticeable as far as loadtimes etc? 9ms to 12ms seems like a pretty big difference.
